📄 Introduction

Fruit Ice is a premium regional ice cream brand operating across Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, known for its fresh, fruit-based flavors. While the brand has successfully built a strong presence through Instagram marketing, it currently lacks a dedicated mobile app to support its expanding customer base across multiple states.

This case study is a mock project based on my own research, thinking, and problem-solving approach. I proposed a simple and user-focused mobile app concept that allows customers to easily browse the latest menu, check real-time stock availability, and locate nearby Fruit Ice stores.
The goal of this project is to explore how a digital solution can enhance customer convenience, drive offline sales, and strengthen the brand’s connection with its audience.

My Role:  UI/UX Designer — Led the end-to-end product design including user research, flow creation, wireframes, high-fidelity UI design, interactive components, and overall visual direction.

Problem Statement

As the demand for Fruit Ice products continues to grow across Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, customers face challenges in easily discovering store locations, checking available flavors, and staying updated on new arrivals. Despite strong online visibility through Instagram marketing, the absence of a dedicated mobile app creates friction in the customer journey and limits direct engagement.

There is a clear opportunity to introduce an intuitive, seamless, and lightweight mobile platform that improves customer experience, enhances accessibility, and strengthens brand loyalty through a more connected and convenient ordering experience. Features such as discount vouchers, free gifts, and special promotions directly through the app could further incentivize customer engagement and retention.

Goal / Objective

The primary goal of this mock project is to design a mobile app that enhances the customer experience for Fruit Ice by providing an intuitive, user-friendly platform. This app aims to:

  • Streamline the customer journey by allowing easy access to the menu, stock updates, and store locations.
  • Boost customer engagement with features like real-time notifications, discount vouchers, and free gift promotions.
  • Increase brand loyalty by offering a seamless and interactive experience that keeps customers coming back for more.
  • Support growth across Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, by providing a scalable, accessible solution that accommodates the expanding customer base.

Research Summary

To understand the needs of Fruit Ice’s customers and identify opportunities for the app, I conducted a mix of secondary research and competitor analysis. Key insights include:

Customer Pain Points:

Difficulty in locating stores, especially when traveling across different regions.

Lack of visibility into real-time product availability (flavors and stock).

Missing the convenience of online ordering and staying updated on promotions or new arrivals.

Market Trends:

Increasing adoption of mobile apps for convenience, especially in local food brands.

Customers enjoy personalized offers, such as discounts and exclusive gifts, which can drive engagement.

Competitor Analysis:

Several local and national ice cream brands have implemented mobile apps that improve customer experience with features like location finders and menu browsing.
Fruit Ice can differentiate itself by integrating unique promotions, like seasonal offers and loyalty rewards.

Solution Idea

To address the challenges faced by Fruit Ice customers, I propose a simple, intuitive mobile app that allows users to:

  • Browse the menu and check real-time availability of flavors.
  • Locate nearby stores based on their current location.
  • Receive personalized offers, such as discounts and free gifts, directly in the app.

This app aims to enhance user engagement, streamline the ordering process, and foster brand loyalty.

What I Learned from This Lesson

Gaining Practical Design Insights and Real-World Problem Solving

This mock project provided me with a real-world perspective on the challenges and considerations when designing for a brand. It wasn’t just about creating a functional app, but about making meaningful design decisions that directly solve user pain points and contribute to business growth.

Key takeaways include:

  • Empathy-Driven Design: I learned how to put myself in the shoes of the customer, ensuring that the app I designed genuinely addresses their needs (finding store locations, checking stock, accessing promotions) while improving their overall experience.
  • Balancing Simplicity and Functionality: The process taught me to focus on delivering core features that matter the most without overwhelming the user. Achieving the right balance between ease of use and feature richness is a critical aspect of any successful product.
  • Design for Engagement: Integrating loyalty features like promotions and rewards allowed me to consider how an app can add value and keep users returning — a lesson in creating brand loyalty through design.
  • Iterative Design Process: By creating wireframes and testing basic flows, I learned the importance of prototyping, getting quick feedback, and iterating — something I will bring into all future projects to ensure efficiency and impactful outcomes.

This project has strengthened my ability to design with a purpose, solve real problems, and think critically about how technology can enhance the customer experience and support brand goals.
